The Current Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens

Canon is indeed working on a new super telephoto zoom lens and it is highly likely that this new Canon super telephoto zoom lens will be announced in the first half of 2018.

The current Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM ($1999) is an excellent choice for wildlife and sports photography, but not long enough for those looking for more reach. The super telephoto zoom lens segment has traditionally been dominated by third party manufacturers with Sigma and Tamron: Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 sports lens ($1,999), Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Contemporary ($989), Tamron SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 G2 ($1,399), Tamron SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 lens ($869). All these 150-600mm lenses are selling really well.

So, Canon does need a slower 600mm super telephoto zoom lens in their lineup. In 2015 Canon filed a patent for EF 200-600mm f/4.5-5.6L USM lens, but nothing happened. We also reported in 2016 that there will be a new Canon EF 200-600mm f/4.5-5.6 IS lens, which will NOT be an “L” lens, and has no weather sealing but great optics and build quality. And this 600mm lens will cost about the same as the 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II ($1,999).

Anyway, 2018 is a great year for the new Canon super telephoto lens!
